Today is a joyous occasion in most of Canada, but in this province, it is also a day of solemnity. Today is the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel. On July 1, 1916, the Newfoundland Regiment was virtually wiped out on the battlefield in minutes. I invite you to read more about Labrador’s veterans at the Labrador Virtual War Memorial, hosted on themdays.com, and to look at The Rooms’ online exhibit about the Newfoundland Regiment.
Some more links about this day, which generally has a sombre tone in the morning that turns into a celebration of Canada at night:

In observance of Memorial Day and Canada Day, Them Days will be closed on Monday, July 2. We will reopen for business as usual at 8:30 am on Tuesday. Enjoy your long weekend!
