Interested in joining our board?

Them Days has a director position open on our board. If you are interested in volunteering your time with an organization dedicated to preserving Labrador history, now’s your chance to get involved! We have monthly board meetings, and directors also sit on a couple of sub-committees, which try to meet once a month as well. Board members also volunteer during events like Culture Days, fundraisers and craft fairs.

Our Board is a group of volunteers with diverse interests and talents. Could you be one of them? Contact the office if you’re interested!

Introducing Alicia!

We have a third person working in the office for the next 14 weeks. Alicia Elson is our Project Assistant for the Grand River special issue. If her name seems familiar, that’s probably because she worked at the local paper for awhile! It’s been really great having Alicia here, and she’s been doing tons of research into the river’s past in the archives and out in the field.

Alicia sits down with Joe Goudie in his canoe shop to talk about the Grand River.

So welcome to the office, Alicia! It’s been wonderful having you around!

Our 2012 Fundraiser!

Another awesome night of music, laughter, friends and fun! I love the Them Days fundraisers, not just because it really touches me to see a lot of people out there supporting Them Days and all that we do, but because they’re also a good time in and of themselves! Our concert was again organized by John Heard, ardent Them Days supporter and fabulous musician and concert organizer, and it didn’t disappoint.

Our silent auction table featured just over 20 items–some rare issues of Them Days, some new items, and the highest bid of all was for an Inukuluk tablecloth!

We at Them Days set up a silent auction for in the lobby, and it was quite successful. We even had a few bidding wars! Even considering that, we had a few rare issues go for relatively cheap prices, so if you were looking for some rare, sold-out back issues to complete your collection, you missed out!

Fred, Clarice and Mavis are happy silent auction winners!

We also had refreshments available during intermission. My gosh, North Mart really outdid themselves in providing a wonderful array of snacks for our supporters. It really added to the atmosphere. People were milling about, looking at the auction items, catching up with old friends, and having a bite to eat. It was a really good time! Thank you to North Mart for their generous donation!

The final song, a singalong of Old Mokami for the whole group of performers and audience.

Of course, the main attraction to this night was the music and the comedic performances. We had performances by Festiva, Kirk Lethbridge, Selby Mesher, Angele Yetman (who again was a fantastic MC for the whole night), St. Paddy’s Day Singers, Susan Felsberg, Suzanne Denty, Mary, Pauline, Janet & Philomena, Tucker Campbell, and Fiona Andersen. You know, these Them Days fundraisers really are a special time.

The organizer of it all, John Heard, and me! Thank you so much John, for putting this all together for us two years in a row! (Please ignore my messy hair!)

Thank you everyone! With your help, we were able to raise over $1500 for Them Days!

Introducing….the Colouring Book!

I have a very exciting announcement: Our Labrador Colouring Book is back! The much-loved book of sketches by Gerald Mitchell has been republished and it can be yours once again.

The Labrador Colouring Book

I remember having one of these colouring books when I was a child, and in fact, it’s still at my parents’ house with the rest of their Them Days collection. So I am personally really happy that the colouring book has been re-released, as it means I’ll be able to give one to my daughter! And I’ll get an un-coloured-in one for myself again. πŸ™‚

Interior pages in the colouring book

The quality of this colouring book is truly outstanding. Gerald’s sketches are a beautiful reminder of life in them days, and they are suitable for framing and hanging in your home, or using as an educational piece with children or grandchildren. And oh, the book is so high quality in terms of the paper. I’m a bit of a paper nerd, and this is really nice stuff. Thick with a nice texture and colour. When you see the book, you’ll be amazed by just how pretty it is.

The Labrador Colouring Book is available exclusively at Them Days. Drop by, give us a call, or use our secure online shopping site.

P.S. In case you can’t tell, this is what was debuted at the fundraiser!!

My class at Mealy Mountain Collegiate

Last Thursday, I had an exciting event penciled in my agenda: 1:15 NL Studies. I was going in to a Newfoundland and Labrador Studies class (grade 10) to talk about the importance of storytelling and oral history and what we do at Them Days. The class is taught by none other than my maternity replacement, Sarah! (But I had to call her Ms. Michaud at school.)

It was a really great class, and a few of the students shared their own stories with the class. I brought in some of my favourite Them Days stories and we read them out loud. It was a ton of fun, and I hope we can do another class in the future. Maybe a field trip?!

Ms. Michaud and I showed the students the Centre for Newfoundland Studies’ Periodical Article Bibliography, and we used it to find Them Days articles about their relatives.

Thank you to Ms. Michaud and her class for a wonderful afternoon filled with stories! It was a lot of fun. πŸ™‚ I hope some of you decide to spend your volunteer hours with me at Them Days!

36.3 is out in the world!

First of all, before we do anything, let me show you this picture:

Yep, our first real snow of the year. We had a few flakes fall a few days ago, but not enough to cover the ground.

Our first snowfall of the year!!!

36.3 is out in the world!!

But what I really wanted to tell you is that issue 36.3 is out in the world! It’s in the retailers right now, and if it’s not in your mailbox yet, it will be soon! I’m really excited about this issue. It’s got a fun section on the Happy Valley teen club (and you’ve GOT to check out the petition signed by all the teenagers), some WONDERFUL old Mud Lake photos, a journal from the 1920s, and so much more!! I don’t think I’ve been this excited about an issue in awhile. So be sure to pick it up when you’re out and about, or buy it from our secure online shopping site!
