I think I can, I think I can…

Still chugging away at the website. These things always seem to take more time than they should. But I am getting very close…things are getting checked off on the to-do list, one by one. I’m hoping to get it all done before the long weekend starts tomorrow! Cross your fingers for me. I’m SO excited to see it all complete, finally. I’ve wanted to do an overhaul of the website for quite some time, and the way I’m doing it will make it easier for other people to update. (I generally hand-code everything, but it’s become tedious. Let the computer do the work for me, I say!)

Snow is melting fast

Snow is melting fast

Our snow has been melting fast, making for a typical dirty, wet Labrador spring. Good thing I wear rubber boots! You can’t see the huge puddles here, but believe me, I walk through a lot on my way home!

Gotta go to lunch…hope to have something exciting to show you tomorrow!

AGM 2013

Last night we held our 2013 AGM, which means we’ve had a changeover in our board. It’s generally a pretty fun night, but there’s always a little bit of apprehension because the board works together so well and you kind of wonder what will become of the next board. (It looks like a promising board, so I’m not actually worried now, but that fear of change always runs through your head the day of the meeting! At least, it runs through mine.)

The AGM was held at the the Friendship Centre, and was catered by their kitchen. (mmm…muffins.) It was a pretty quick event–over in about an hour’s time–and then everybody milled about, chatted, and ate muffins. Allan was elected back to the board, and Frank and Bev declined to return. We’re sad to see them go, but I know they’re not going far. (Thank you so much for offering to stay involved in the Editorial Committee, Frank, and Bev, I know I can count on you for Culture Days fun!) We had Jennifer Best and Terrilynn Saunders-Ryan join the board, and I’m excited to work with them! They already seem to fit in quite well. We also had somebody (Adrienne Edmunds) join the board in absentia, so I’m excited to meet her too!

See? Everybody's so happy at our AGM. Theresa and Linda are always laughing about something.

Hello Robin!

Hello Robin!

This is an outtake of the official goodbye picture, but it is way cuter with everybody laughing and joking, so outtake you're getting!

Who watched Rick Mercer last night?

Last night’s episode of Rick Mercer Report was all about the Labrador Winter Games. I’m pretty sure almost every television in Labrador was tuned into CBC last night to watch. I don’t have a television, so I made a social evening of it and went over to my cousin’s house to watch it–after all, our great-uncle Max was featured in the segment about the Labrathon! We had some good laughs. You can watch the segments about the games by following this link.

And while you’re watching videos about Labrador, check out this one from Land and Sea about the Blake sisters who have taken up drumdancing and throat singing.

I’ve been busy updating and upgrading our website. Times like this, I am really missing my Katimavik help. There’s a lot of data entry to be done (I have to make new entries/pages for each and every item in the online store, for example) so it’s not particularly fast going. But it is getting done, and I’m excited to see it all finished!

Don’t forget about our AGM tonight at 7:00 in the Labrador Friendship Centre Multi-Purpose room. Get involved with Them Days, or just learn about what’s going on!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to working on the website…

At the College Multiculturalism Fair

A few weeks ago, I was asked to attend the College of the North Atlantic’s Multiculturalism fair. I put together a little display (it reminded me of doing a science fair project!) and then headed down for a morning of fun and flummies.

Students were split into groups for activities, and a number of them had to answer trivia questions about my booth. Turns out, I had a bit of a trick question, but didn’t realize it! Kinda funny how that happens.

Students crowded around the booths to find the answers to their questions.

The booth next to me was a real hit. Eric Flynn is a local snowshoe-maker, and he brought along one of his works-in-progress. Next year, I should bring along something cool like snowshoes.

Other students participated in some cultural games, which was a good lead-up to the [then-upcoming] Labrador Winter Games! You know, some people can go really fast doing the seal crawl!

Everybody was encouraged to dress up in traditional clothes, and it was so nice to see all the beautiful boots and coats!

Gerald Mitchell stops by

It’s funny–here at the Them Days office, we can go days without seeing someone come in, but then we get tons of visitors all at once. It’s actually quite bizarre. (But hey, keeping coming by…we love having visitors.) Today we were having one of those busy afternoons, when who should walk in but the Labrador Balladeer himself, Gerald Mitchell!

He stopped by to sign some colouring books (he’s the artist who sketched the images) that we can use in future fundraisers. Thank you, Gerald!

So of course, I had to get my photo with him.

So that was an exciting way to end this Thursday!
