Birch Island Project

Healthy Waters Labrador, a conservation group based here in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, is working on a plan to clean up Birch Island Creek and create walking trails on Birch Island so the wetland area can be enjoyed by residents (while also keeping the area free from human interference and damage). Birch Island, as you may know, is an island in the Grand River next to Happy Valley. It used to be home to a number of residents before Resettlement in the 1960s.

We’ve partnered with them to help out with the historical side of things. One of the things that we plan to come out of this is an issue centred around Birch Island!! (Exciting, hey?) They also hope to put up storyboards/signs around the island about the history and commemorate the community of Birch Island in some way.

So, one of the ways we’ve been getting information is by asking former residents about life there. We held our first little mug-up to discuss Birch Island a couple of weeks ago at the Friendship Centre. We had a great turnout and heard lots of amazing stories!!
